It was not only to pamper themselves but a social gathering, Seeing the ladies from their neighborhoods at the salon. Gossiping and catching up on gossip. No cell phones so this is where they got their information. Saw the new trends and kept up their friendships, and encouraged one another. A slower easier time. It's very hard for these women to change their hairstyle. It's what they're most comfortable in, and what they wore during their most vibrant and vital years.
