A prominent chemistry professor has withdrawn her tenure application from UNC, citing the ongoing Nikole Hannah-Jones case.
Hannah-Jones, an award-winning journalist, was set to join UNC's journalism faculty in a tenured position. However, the UNC Board of Trustees did not take a vote on her tenure application after concerns were raised about her background.
Dr. Lisa Jones, currently teaching at the University of Maryland, said in a letter to the UNC Department of Chemistry that she "cannot see [herself] accepting a position at a university where this decision stands."
"The news this week that Nikole Hannah-Jones was denied tenure was very disheartening," Jones wrote. "It does not seem in line with a school that says it is interested in diversity."
The Department of Chemistry have since sent a letter to UNC Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz and other administrators, saying the inaction on Hannah-Jones tenure application is making it hard to recruit faculty members.
