The UNC Faculty Executive Committee met on Monday morning to discuss the topic of Nikole Hannah-Jones not being offered tenure at the university, calling it a "breach of trust."
Committee members asked for an official statement from the UNC Board of Trustees and said they will go directly to UNC System offices if they do not hear back. In addition, the committee asked the board to take up review of Hannah-Jones' application ahead of the end of the fiscal year (July 1).
In crafting their statement, committee members asked the Board of Trustees to call a special meeting "immediately" and to "explain to the fullest extent possible, without violating the law, the reason for its decision."
Hannah-Jones was set to return to UNC’s journalism school as the Knight Chair in Race and Investigative Journalism, a tenured professorship.
