One year ago, the nation erupted after George Floyd was killed by Minneapolis police officers. On Tuesday, a jury found former officer Derek Chauvin guilty of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter in Floyd's death.
The crowd gathered outside the Minneapolis courthouse broke out in cheers upon hearing the verdict, but people quickly spread the message that the fight to end racial injustice was far from over.
"Justice for George Floyd though we can’t have his life back," said Chapel Hill Town Council member Allen Buansi. "Today is a ray of hope for the future and holding people accountable for unjust treatment causing the senseless deaths of black and brown people."
