Nine months after finishing high school, Constable Katie joined the police force. One of the youngest recruits at time, Kate’s experience as an Air Force cadet, SES volunteer, and time working at St John Ambulance equipped her with the skills and confidence she needed to get into the Academy. Fresh from a classroom setting also ensured the transition between learning environments was seamless. As a young member, Katie finds it easier to relate to people, specifically “Some younger kids [who] find it comforting to talk to someone their age.” After completing her 31 weeks of training, Katie was stationed at Oakleigh Police Station, where she received mentorship from senior members to ensure she had all the support she needed to adjust to life as a police officer.
