Video by nicholesobecki | Can you guess which animal is behind the world’s biggest mammal migration? The bat! Or to be more specific, over a million straw-colored fruit bats (Eidolon helvum). At this time of year, colonies of the world’s only flying mammal make extraordinary trips from vast corners of the African continent to Zambia’s tiny Kasanka National Park for a fruit feast. All along their journeys, they disperse seeds that help reforest and regenerate landscapes from the Democratic Republic of the Congo to South Sudan and beyond. Their dramatic emergences at dawn and dusk are among the most extraordinary sights—and sounds—I’ve ever seen and are yet another reason to celebrate these vital but much maligned mammals. #BatAppreciationWeek
