Severe Drought Continues In Louisiana and Mississippi
Louisiana and Mississippi are experiencing their most widespread “exceptional” drought in more than two decades, according to the Drought Monitor. Low water levels allowed a saltwater intrusion from the Gulf of Mexico to push its way up the drought-stricken Mississippi River towards New Orleans. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers intervened to slow the movement of the saltwater and barge fresh water to dilute the salinity content. Farmers kicked off harvest of Louisiana’s 500,000 acres of sugarcane, a decline in crop yields is predicted due to drought conditions. | Oct. 09 - 12, 2023 |
