#FirstGenLonghorns: Ken Capps grew up three miles from the Forty Acres. Since 5th grade, he knew he wanted to study journalism because of Superman and his alter ego, Clark Kent. Capps was the first person in his family to attend and graduate from college. He completed his journalism degree with high honors in 1982 and was named Outstanding Journalism Student of the Year that same year. His parents and grandparents did not have the means to attend college. They were farmers and railroad workers and served in World War II and the Korean War. "They served this country well. And that service paved the way for me to attend UT. I am proud of their legacy, and I can never thank them enough." When Capps was ten years old, his father passed away. During the 70s, his mom worked very hard as a single mother to ensure he could attend UT and graduate.
