Emily Sturgess Design planned the den with both the homeowner and houseguest in mind; a jewel box hideaway for quiet afternoons spent reading or late evenings with friends playing cards and sipping cocktails. Pierre Frey’s wallcovering, Ismaelia, a spirited pattern of exotic animal and flowering vines inspired the room’s color palette of crystal blues and spring greens. A custom banquette and club chair are upholstered in complementary tones to create thoughtful, intimate seating vignettes. A 19th century French bamboo secretary serves as both a desk and “cabinet of curiosities,” displaying a small collection of decorative objects and an impromptu bar for after-dinner drinks. Coupled with layers of vintage lighting, art and accessories, the result is an inspired space that exudes personality, a bit of whimsy and timeless sophistication.
