In continuing our support for #PrematurityAwarenessMonth, read Janette Heil’s story: “Our third daughter, Calliope (Callie), was born in June 2023 at 29 weeks due to intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), preeclampsia and reduced cord flow, weighing just 1 lb 12.4 oz. Although my obstetrics practice only delivers at Paoli Hospital, she was born at Bryn Mawr Hospital after I was sent to the labor and delivery unit following a Doppler scan at Bryn Mawr's Perinatal Testing Center. I was monitored for about 36 hours before the team decided to deliver Callie via c-section. Prior to delivery, Richard B. Ritterman, MD came to discuss what would happen with my husband and me. He explained Callie's chances for survival were in the high nineties, which is the same as if a baby is born at 40 weeks. This fact helped me get through her birth and the NICU stay.
