Over the past week, more than a dozen people visiting Forest Grove’s public library left offerings along the building’s inner ramp. Photos of loved ones, friends and pets sat alongside vibrant Día de los Muertos decorations.
The altar honoring the dead, called an ofrenda, is something that Carolina Velazquez was accustomed to seeing every year when she worked in California libraries. With support from her coworker Lily Hawley, she brought that tradition to her new workplace.
“Moving here, I wasn’t sure how well received it would be,” said Velazquez, who’s been working at Forest Grove’s library for a year. “I’m so happy that it was an overwhelmingly positive experience for our patrons.”
