In 2022, as the world suffered from yet another year of extreme climate disasters, the top 15 traditional automakers only sold 5.6% electric vehicles (EVs), with the bulk of the shift EVs powered by brands like BYD and Tesla.
The world's largest automaker Toyota is struggling to keep pace. Fewer than 1 out of 400 cars (0.24%) was an EV in 2022. Their focus on hybrids, which still rely on fossil fuels, are impeding their transition to electric.
Another disconcerting trend in the auto industry is the surge in SUV sales. Hyundai_Global saw over 50% of their 2022 sales being SUVs, the highest among top automakers. The surge in SUVs demands more resources for manufacturing and consumes more fuel.
While it's important to note that EVs aren't a one-size-fits-all climate solution, automakers must shift away from a profit model that sells fossil fuel cars & encourages car ownership.
