When it opened in 1931, Oakland’s 3,476-seat Paramount Theatre of the Arts was the largest movie palace on the West Coast. Audience capacity dropped marginally – to 3,040 – during the 1973 restoration, while the sumptuous Art Deco interior was painstakingly restored to its original magnificence. This fall, the resplendent architecture was complemented by a new #MeyerSound reinforcement system, supplied and installed by sound.image.official, a Clair Global Brand. The Paramount Theatre has been awarded multiple historic designations, including that of a U.S. National Historic Landmark. The status assures the preservation of the theater’s visual aesthetics, but it raised challenges for the audio system renewal.
