42 years ago Hugh Herr lost both legs to frostbite after three nights stranded on Mt. Washington in New Hampshire. In the search effort, a volunteer from the Mountain Rescue Service named Albert Dow would lose his life in an avalanche. His death weighed heavily on Hugh. In the darkness that followed, he became driven to honor Albert’s memory.
Now decades later, he’s one of the leading developers of prosthetics and bionic limbs, and he helps people move again, even in the mountains.
