Today, in honor of #WorldPrematurityDay, read Ashley Kempa’s story: “World Prematurity Day is an important day in the Kempa household as we reflect on a chapter in each story of our three young daughters. In 2019, we found out at 13 weeks that we were expecting Mono Mono twins. At 24 weeks, I was admitted to Lankenau Medical Center and I delivered the twins, Grace and Brynn, at 28 weeks. Weighing only 2lb 5oz and 1lb 15oz each, we knew we had a long road ahead of us. We hoped for steady progress and tried to keep positive on the days when a setback occurred. It was an overwhelming experience to understand and witness the challenges your tiny new babies needed to learn and endure — breathing on their own, maintaining their body temperature, learning to eat and much more. Thanks to the support of the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) staff at Lankenau Medical Center, we made it through the nearly 100-day journey. The staff became friends and felt like family.
