Sundays were once rough for Rae-Koh Calder. “I live in a very conservative part of Oregon and I grew up in a very conservative church, and I always felt bad about myself. And Sundays were always associated with me being a sinner,” the 17-year-old said. Then he joined Bridging Voices, a choir for queer and trans youth and allies. They rehearse Sunday afternoons. Now, Calder says, Sunday is “actually a good day.” Bridging Voices debuted in 2013 as GSA Youth Chorus, a name that alluded to Gay-Straight Alliance clubs in schools. According to an Oregonian/OregonLive story at the time, members of Waverly Heights United Church of Christ in Portland were inspired to start the choir after a similar chorus from Seattle performed at the church.
