Then & now, the William the Silent statue 🗓️
Installed on April 9th, 1928, this statue in Voorhees Mall commemorates William I, Prince of Orange. The statue of William the Silent stands at about 15 feet tall, positioned on top of a square stone base measuring 6 feet in height and weighing around 2,000 pounds.
William I, the Prince of Orange, served as an early leader in the Dutch revolt against Habsburg Spain, ultimately leading to the independence of the Netherlands in 1648. Due to his pivotal role, he is honored as the "Father of the Fatherland."
Rutgers students fondly refer to the statue as "Willie the Silent" and "Still Bill."
