On this day in 1969, members of the Black Organization of Students barricade themselves in Conklin Hall, Rutgers University–Newark's main classroom building. The Black Organization of Students initially delivered a list of requests to school administrators, including the appointment of additional black professors and a large increase in black enrollment. This was due to Rutgers-Newark being more than 95% white in addition to campus officials showing little interest in recruiting minority students or faculty. Students began organizing a takeover of Conklin Hall, one of Rutgers-biggest Newark's classroom buildings, when the institution denied their requests. After three days of negotiations, the administration agrees to expand the number of African-American students, educators, and staff. The takeover spurs a wave of protests in Camden and New Brunswick, ushering in a university-wide transformation. #TBT ⏲️
