Waksman and his students, including graduate students Albert Schatz and Elizabeth Bugie, bring nearly 30 years of soil microbiology research to a close with the discovery of streptomycin, the first effective tuberculosis treatment and the first antimicrobial agent after penicillin. Waksman coined the term "antibiotic" and established the Waksman Institute of Microbiology at Rutgers.
