For this #ScenicSunday, we wanted to feature the first dormitory here at Rutgers, Winants Hall.
Winants Hall was built in 1890. Garret E. Winants, a wealthy philanthropist from Bayonne, joined the Board of Trustees in 1889 and pitched a sketch of a planned dormitory structure along with a contribution of $75,000 to fund its construction a year later. Up until 1915, when John Ford Hall was built, Winants Hall was Rutgers' only dormitory.
