Did you know 152 years ago today in 1869, scarlet was chosen by Rutgers students as the official school color?
According to a legend at Rutgers, scarlet was chosen to represent the blood of Revolutionary War patriot-spy Nathan Hale, who was allegedly hanged by the British in 1776 on land owned by Colonel Henry Rutgers in lower Manhattan. Others argue that scarlet is preferred to orange, which is commonly associated with the Dutch, since red fabrics are more readily available.
