Did you know that a Rutgers alumnus is behind the shoulder stripe on the highway?
In 1952, acclaimed metallurgist John Van Nostrand Dorr (RC1894) realized a right shoulder line would guide drivers and reduce accidents. His wife complained that headlight glare from oncoming traffic led drivers to swerve away from the center line and into the soft shoulder.
As a result, he wrote to Connecticut's State Highway Commissioner and suggested that a shoulder stripe would alleviate this issue. After receiving no response, his foundation funds research that demonstrates the line's effectiveness. Over the following decade, shoulder lines become the standard.
