Dr. Auerbach's work was brought to national attention in 1964, when it was prominently cited in the first Surgeon General's report about the dangers of smoking. With the results from his work published, they were immediately debated and had powerful long-term effects. After the Surgeon General's report, a major policy response required cigarette packages to carry a warning that cigarettes could be harmful to health.
