Did you know today makes 77 years since the treatment for tuberculosis was discovered by Rutgers researchers?
Selman A. Waksman and his graduate students Albert Schatz and Elizabeth Bugie culminated nearly 30 years of research in soil microbiology in the discovery of streptomycin, the first effective treatment for tuberculosis.
By the dawn of the 19th century, tuberculosis had killed one in seven of all people that had ever lived. With the discovery of streptomycin, this would be a huge breakthrough in treating tuberculosis.
