Painter Grace Lynne Haynes (@bygracelynne) 🖌, a student in the Department of Art & Design (@rutgersart), accomplished something few young artists have before she even began her MFA at this fall: painting not one, but two, covers for The New Yorker (@newyorkermag) since early August.
In addition to her covers for The New Yorker, Project For Empty Space (@projectforemptyspace) and Ras J. Baraka (@rasjbaraka) announced the completion of a new mural titled Sojourner Truth, Founding Mother (2020). Nearly 30 feet high, the portrait of African-American activist Sojourner Truth lives on Edison Place, in the rear of Project for Empty Space’s new home on Broad Street which houses a community art gallery and 50 artist studios.
“My role as a visual artist and a Black woman is to reflect on the current state of womanhood and create paintings that represent what women in my generation are feeling and going through.”
