"The Tomato that went to college." š ā£
ā£
Coined by a @campbells ad in 1955, it still rings true today. Developed by our very own professor L.G. Schermerhorn in cooperation with Campbellās, this tomato was refined and studied on New Jersey farms until the most superior selection was debuted as the āRutgersā tomato on this day in 1934.ā£
ā£
Following this release, the Rutgers tomato became the dominant commercial tomato of the mid-20th century, prized by Campbellās Soup, Heinz, and many others. By 1952, the Rutgers tomato represented 72% of all commercially grown tomatoes in the U.S. and was widely grown in other countries.ā£

While the Rutgers tomato is no longer commercially grown for canned tomato production, it is still a favorite among home gardeners and widely available from seed catalogs and garden centers.ā£
