On This Day: September 16th Billy Maxwell won the U.S. Amateur in 1951. The Class of 1982 Professional Player inductee advanced to the Round of 16 in 1950 and then won the title a year later at Saucon Valley Country Club in Bethlehem, Pa. Before a massive crowd of 7,000 spectators, Maxwell, then 22, beat future New York State Supreme Court Justice Joe Gagliardi, 4 and 3, in the championship match to become, at the time, the second youngest to engrave his name on the Havemeyer Trophy.
