Hale Irwin won the first of his three usopengolf championships at Winged Foot 50 years ago this Sunday.
Winged Foot played extremely difficult throughout the tournament, leading sportswriter Dick Schaap to coin the phrase “The Massacre at Winged Foot”.
Irwin finished the tournament at +7 (287) to win by two shots.
