On This Day: August 5th - Playoff Wins! Our Class of 1985 Amateur Inductee, Scott Verplank won the Western Open as an Amateur in 1985. After the playoff victory over Jim Thorpe, he became the first amateur to win a PGA TOUR event in 29 years. He did this while attending Oklahoma State University. David Graham won the PGA Championship in a playoff over fellow Texas Golf Hall of Fame member, Ben Crenshaw in 1979. The Class of 2013 Professional Player Inductee made a double bogey on his final hole to go into a playoff. He would then make a birdie on the 3rd hole to secure the win.
