SETF established the Wisdom House in 2016, and it has grown every year, welcoming more students, teachers, and programs. Beyond being a place of education for hundreds of children, it has served as a safe haven - a place where kids can simply be kids despite the brutal war waged by Assad In 2020, tragedy struck when intense bombing by the Assad regime forced the original Wisdom House school and its community to flee. In a single day leading up to the evacuation, Assad bombed the small rural town of Maarat al-Numan in Idlib’s countryside 800 times. 800. Students and teachers were forced to abandon their school and homes, but we acted quickly, opening a new Wisdom House where the community resettled. Now, following the liberation of Syria, SETF staff have returned to Maarat al-Numan and visited the remains of our old school. This is what's left. This is what Assad's regime did to our school. #FreeSyria
