After two centuries of educating exclusively male students, Rutgers College admitted its first class of 450 women in the fall of 1972. However, with change came some pushback. 🚿 The dorm bathrooms were equipped with urinals, but lacked shower curtains. 🤨 Some male students carried resentment toward their new peers. 📉 Faculty feared women would lower academic standards and distract the male student body. That boundary-pushing first female class turned out to be one of the most selective of any institution of higher education in the country at the time, according to Arnold B.
