Before lecture halls, dining halls and dorms dotted Livingston Campus, it was a sprawling Army camp where soldiers kissed loved ones goodbye and refugees found hope. 🏘️ Opened in 1942, more than 2.5 million soldiers passed through Camp Kilmer on their way to and from Europe during World War II. It was reactivated during the 1950s for Korean War deployments. 🎖️ After WWII and the passage of the GI Bill, the camp temporarily housed some Rutgers student veterans. 🇭🇺 Tens of thousands of refugees resettled at Camp Kilmer during the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, with many settling in New Brunswick. The Livingston Campus sits on 540-acres of Camp Kilmer purchased by Rutgers in 1964. Much of the original Camp buildings have been demolished, but a few still standing near Cedar Lane are used by the university. #RUArchives50th
