On Friday, June 9th, the Southwest Branch of the Monroe County Public Library officially opened its doors to the public. As part of Community Access Television Services, I had the opportunity to capture the event. I’m so thankful to be part of a town that has so much love and appreciation for its libraries not just as “book-lending stores”, but as community centers focused on giving back to the people of Monroe County and providing a safe, accessible place for all ages to learn and grow. The Southwest Branch offers (in addition to a wide selection of books, movies, audiobooks, and CDs) a teaching kitchen, a teen area, an all-ages collaborative space, and an outdoor amphitheater. With its addition, more patrons in Bloomington will now have easier access to a public library. Working this event made me realize how powerful of a resource libraries are, and how important they are in fostering a healthy and positive community.
